In recent years Costa Rica's Guanacaste region has experienced a huge jump in its tourism industry, with travelers arriving in droves to experience Guanacaste's idyllic beaches and brand spanking new resorts.  Liberia is a medium sized city and the capital of Guanacaste province, with an international airport that allows easy access to the region.   While most travelers choose to stay on the beach or in the mountains, Liberia does offer its visitors pretty Spanish colonial era buildings and easy access to Rincon de la Vieja National Park.

Liberia's Plaza
As in many Central American cities, Liberia's central plaza is at the heart of social activity for the local population. The plaza takes up a couple of blocks directly in front of the town's church. Visitors can take a turn around the plaza or sit on a bench and watch the flirting teens and energetic young families.

Spanish Colonial Architecture
The streets around the plaza are where you'll find the best examples of colonial architecture in Liberia.  Pick a street and stroll a few blocks, taking in the bahareque clay homes with courtyards, wrought ironwork and dramatic, elaborately carved wooden doors.

Sabanero Museum
Just three blocks from Liberia’s church is Sabanero Museum, a small exhibit of photos, tools and artifacts documenting the lives of local residents from the days when Costa Rica was a Spanish colony.

National Parks
Liberia is located near two national parks, Palo Verde National Park and Rincon de la Vieja National Park, where visitors can hike, boat, birdwatch and more.

Boat Tours
Those who’d like to explore the miles of rushing rivers in the Liberia area can take a boat tour.  Papagayo Vargas Tours is one popular Liberia area tour company.

Shopping
On the south end of Liberia you’ll find a modern shopping mall, and along the road leading from Liberia to the coast there are numerous shops and stands selling souvenirs and handicrafts created by local artisans.

Festival
If you're planning to visit in late July, you can experience the parades, rodeos and fiestas of Liberia's biggest festival, "El Dia de la Anexion," celebrating July 25, the day the Guanacaste region was annexed to Costa Rica in 1824.
